THE START OF AN EXPERIMENT · BY KELLY JAYNE
The salad chapter.
A place to start.
A yellow cookbook, a chapter full of possibilities, and the very reasonable question: what if I actually made these?

I collect vintage cookbooks. Part of the fun is opening a book and finding something completely familiar beside something I can barely imagine putting on a plate.
Why start with salads?
Because this chapter has range. Fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood, molded salads, and dressings all share the same space. It’s a perfect starting point for a series built around curiosity.
The book is Southern Living: Our Best Recipes, the yellow-covered copy pictured here. This first deep dive follows its “Salads and Salad Dressings” chapter, on printed pages 295–331.
The plan: follow the curiosity.
I want to make the recipes, look into their context, and document what happens in a modern kitchen. Some may earn a permanent place in the recipe box. Others may be memorable for entirely different reasons.
Trial, error, and audacity.
The kitchen seems like a good place to start.
A recipe box with room to grow.
As the experiments are ready to share, their recipes will appear in the recipe box with ingredient lists, directions, source credits, and a printable version. This is the beginning of the collection.
